Bekal: Where Punk Energy Meets Serious Gastronomy

I'll be honest – when I first stepped into Bekal in Zagreb's beloved Trešnjevka neighborhood, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The space is deliberately Spartan, almost chaotic, with an energy that feels more underground music venue than fine dining establishment. And that's exactly the point.

Young chef Marko Turković, hailing from the stunning island of Korčula, has created something truly unique here. There's no menu to browse, no safe choices to fall back on – just a blind tasting journey of five or six courses that demands your trust and rewards your curiosity. It's bold, it's a little punk rock, and I absolutely loved it.

The magic happens over wood fire, where Croatian ingredients transform into dishes that bridge ancient techniques with contemporary creativity. During my visit, I was mesmerized by oyster mushrooms swimming in rich meat broth, and a lamb dish with caramelized milk cream that I still dream about weeks later.

Why You Should Go

Bekal isn't for everyone, and chef Turković wouldn't have it any other way.
